You seem to miss one option: delivery not at your door but at a commercial point near by. That’s what HP does for collecting recycled items, free of charge for the customer. The French postal service also has “delivery boxes” in train stations and other public places open all day for people to pick their packages.
It is also true to see that two packages officially traveling with two different delivery services are actually delivered together by the same delivery service, which means private delivery services are actually coordinating their services and thus getting rid of competition between them.
At least that’s our experience in Europe.
