You should know first of all that the author is a woman, but I guess you do know this. You may read the book without taking this into account, but you would be surprised by some very unexpected elements. There are not many female characters and some of them are real monsters of authority, frustration, and compensation. And yet there is no sexism in this treatment. In fact, the female characters who are viciously aggressive are also victims or have been victims for a long time, and for them, it is only an eye for an eye. The fact that one of these female characters is the mistress, or master if you prefer, of very vicious and lethal snakes is typically compensation for a life of sexist frustration or even bullying. The snakes become penile compensations.

You might also be surprised by the particular relationship the two officially male characters Xie Lian and San Lang / Hua Cheng entertain. All the more surprised because they are described as being real beauties, and by beauty, I mean they have extremely fine quasi-feminine features without being women.
