This is a binary choice, either… or…. The low road or the high road. And we do not take into account what is between the two roads. I am more on the Buddhist line: the proper choice is a compromise between the two options you set on the table. In Politics, the extreme right and the extreme left are both wrong and the third option is a compromise in-between. Note it was also the line of Jesus and the Christian tradition. Between extreme Dead Sea Scrolls Jewishness and the total dilution of Jewishness into Roman-ness (the latter was very opportunistic in history and only lasted six or seven centuries) he chose the middle way of “love” and particularly “love your enemy.” The Jewish choice is more complex since they state there is an elect-people, the Jews, and the Gentiles, the goyim. This binarism leads to all kinds of evils, and it led directly to Islam with the first son of Abraham (Ishmael). And we know the fake binary choices these approaches can give: jihad or traitor. Luckily there is a third choice: love, but this time not Christian love but love for life, for existential experience. This third option for Muslims is still being in the process of being developed.
