Jacques Coulardeau has been reading Shakespeare’s plays and poetry for at least more than 60 years. He has watched hundreds of plays and other productions by Shakespeare or adapted from Shakespeare on all stages imaginable and on all screens possible.

In this volume, he considers the full collection of Shakespeare’s plays as produced by the BBC for television. But he enriches and expands this corpus of reviews with extra-reviews written for wider projects, research conferences or various publications, most of them for students or researchers confronted to Shakespeare for an exam or for a lifelong exploration of the intricacies of this work.

He is not interested in the speculations about the “identity” or “identities” of this playwright known as Shakespeare, and certainly not about the gender orientation of the man, who after all could be a woman. Why not Queen Elizabeth I. Such ventures, too often badly inspired from psychoanalysis, are of no interest and do not bring anything new about the plays and the style of these plays as well as of Shakespeare’s poetry.
