It flows freely too along the German Sturm und Drang poets, playwrights, composers and other artists. Compare the Negro Hung alive and the small poem by Goethe on Prometheus. Same inspiration. Think of his chimney sweepers, positive and negative, and you have there the best inspiration that will produce Baudelaire or Rimbaud. His wrapping up of his poetry and art in some mythical, mystical, visionary witchcraft is in fact the very first step towards a new genre that is going to start in England with Mary Shelley, but in Europe more generally. Think of the Erlkönig by Goethe again, or Egmont in a real political and historical situation and what about Faust and Faust 2? They call this literature horror, fantastic, supernatural,. Another König is not far behind, Stephen King, and before him many others who cast their visions in some realistic situation and not in a sorceress's or sorcerer's nightmare. Frankenstein, Dracula, Lovecraft, Poe and so many others, and what about Shakespeare himself and his Titus Andronicus? Blake is unique because of his absolute mastering of English and his art that amplifies, not illustrates, his poetry. Some of his visionary works are at least equal to the famous Apocalypse entirely reimagined by Anne Rice and Stephen King, Ray Bradbury and Hubbard. Blake is the Torah of sciernce fiction, the Quran of Horror, the Dhammapada of our decaying yet regenerating wold. All civililzation have a founding work of imagination like the Popol Vuh of the Mayas.
